New England Patriots Legend Gives Strong Advice To Drake Maye
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots had their sights set on securing a potential franchise quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick, given the abundance of talent available at that position at the draft’s forefront.

With the departure of the iconic head coach Bill Belichick preceding this draft, the Patriots signaled a readiness for a significant shift in philosophy, marking the dawn of a new era for the storied franchise.

Ultimately, the Patriots observed the Chicago Bears selecting Caleb Williams at No. 1, followed by Jayden Daniels heading to the Washington Commanders at No. 2. Consequently, the team opted for quarterback Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina.

Offering guidance to the incoming rookie quarterback, New England legend Devin McCourty conveyed a message to Maye via Carlos Talks Pats on Twitter, stating, “Just remember, as awesome as [draft] night is, it’s just the beginning. You’re walking into a culture — a history, that is built on winning championships,” as part of his extensive advice.

Thus far, Maye has been warmly embraced by the team, garnering favor from fans, media, and former Patriots players alike, signaling promising prospects for his tenure with the franchise.

However, Maye faces the task of earning his place as the starting quarterback in New England, especially with the recent acquisition of veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who is poised to assume the starting role from the outset in Week 1.

Although Brissett is anticipated to take the helm initially, Maye will undoubtedly have the opportunity to compete for the starting position during training camp or capitalize on any struggles the veteran may encounter during the regular season, potentially seeing playing time sooner rather than later.

It will be interesting to see how Drake Maye handles the expectations and pressure that are facing him. The New England Patriots cannot afford to miss with this pick.
